Città is a surprising new addition to Fort York's slowly developing neighbourhood

hree years ago, you'd have a hard time convincing me it was worth-while to head down to Toronto's Fort York neighbourhood. A lonely outpost of condo towers and streetcar tracks, to call this area a neighbourhood was being kind. But things have been changing just north of the waterfront.

Last year, the Toronto Public Library opened a new, hi-tech outpost in hopes of enticing residents from the over-saturated and under cultured neighbourhoods of Liberty Village and City Place to meet in the middle.

A number of restaurants followed including the newly opened, Città, an Italian collaboration between Executive Chef Ben Heaton of The Grove and David Mattachiono, the former pizza master at Terroni. Backed by restaurant moguls Hanif Harji and Charles Khabouth (whose other restaurants include PatriaWestLodge and and NAO), the restaurant offers the perfect excuse to wander south of King Street.

On a recent tasting, I got to sample a pretty large chunk of the menu including cheese and sopressata plates, burrata, squash fritters, tagliatelle alla bolognese, pizzas and a wide selection of desserts. I was happily stuffed. Not just because it was so much food but because it was actually good.

The biggest standouts were easily the starter plates of cheese and meat, burrata, squash fritters and salted caramel bomboloni for dessert--like I'm still dreaming about that bomboloni.
